Do You Know This Fish??

Postby Yellowstone7 » Mon Sep 01, 2014 8:51 pm

Hi Everyone:

A couple of years ago Roger and I ran a little contest called "Guess the Fish of the Week". It was very interesting for a while as many of our knowledgeable members all pitched in to guess what the fish were. Barns, Chuck did extremely well in this guessing game. Tonight I built a fish what is somewhat unique and I am asking you guys to guess what it is. Here are some pictures of this rare fish. It grows to a known 33 1/2 inch and will eagerly take a well presented fly.

Please post your guesses and comments on this page. Have fun!

I know it ;) and you are right, Stanley. It IS a very rare fish indeed. I won't say it's name yet, let's let others try to figure it out ;-)

Hi Chuck and Everyone:

You are right, this fish is so rare that I only found a handful of pictures of it on the internet. Shhhhhhhhhhhhh......! Don't let the cat out of the bag yet!

This fish lives in this beautiful stream environment. Pretty nice, really. Not your average bass pond for sure.

I know the answer, I know it :!: It's the rare "Bugle Mouthed Yellow Belly Minnow Slurping Sap Sucker" located only in a couple streams
in Montana, USA. (OOPS, sorry, now come to think of it, that's a rare bird.)

Hi Cutch, Chuck and Everyone:

Cutch...thanks for trying. I know it does look somehow like a sucker but it is not. This fish has a lower lip longer than the upper lip. I know this might be a tough one as it is quite rare, and found only in a couple of locations.

I was not totally happy with the profile pictures of the first fish, especially the rear fin so I went ahead and redid them. Here you can see the results. I think it looks better now.

Hi Chuck and Everyone:

Yup! It has two words, almost sounds like a rock group or a name for a Hollywood movie star. LOL

Will see what the other guys can come up with before you take the lid off. How did you come to know this fish anyway? Very interesting.

We'll just say I read a lot about it with great interest when reading about the Taimen a few months ago. I will not say WHICH Taimen, as the location would give the fish away ;)

Hi Stanley and Chuck,
Well nobody guessed your fish so far, send me an email on the name of fish and I will do a write up on it. I've tried to find the name but come up empty handed. Hopefully someone will come up with it soon. Good luck.

Ok, well it's been a week with no guesses, so I guess I'll spill the beans since I know what it is and Mr. Roger is looking for the info. The fish species is an Altai-Osman, a rare fish found in Mongolia. ;)

Hi Roger, Chuck and Everyone:

The mystery has been solved. Chuck sure knows his fish. It is the Altai-Osman found in Mongolia! Congratulations to Chuck, very impressive fish knowledge and this is a real asset to our Forum.

I will try to get it finished sometime in the near future so you guys can catch it in one of Martin's Mongolian outings.

Stanley
