Current build now official (out of beta)

Postby paul » Fri Nov 12, 2010 3:48 am

Hey, all. It's finally the official release. This includes a few bug fixes and the latest minor changes (smaller line-out display, better range of rod control, etc.) If you've been testing the betas you won't see a lot different in this, other than some tweaks for performance and again, some minor bug fixes. Compared to the last official release this is a much bigger change though.

This build uses the InstallJammer installer, which is a lot more robust than my old installer. It will (by default) install to c:\games\vr sportfishing. The game (when launched by the shortcut) will now check your version of DirectX and if some of those pesky DLLs are missing it will automatically launch the necessary DirectX installer before starting the game. This should save some headaches.

Unless you install in a folder where the game is already located, you'll need to activate the game again. Either find the email with your activation code, or open the file pvrsa.txt in the old installation and copy the activation code from there.

Also, unless your saved games are from the latest beta build, it's a good idea to start a new game with the new build. If you do have the latest beta and want to continue those games, just copy the *.gam files from you old installation.

That's about it. I'm getting back to work on the fly fishing now.

Tight lines,

Paul

Thanks Paul! Why don't you post it in the Download section?

Will do. I'm uploading a slightly modified build that will only affect the demo version. It will give people a fresh start (if they've used up the time limit) and the time limit changes from 2 hours to 5.

I've found and fixed a few more issues, especially they way fish cope with strong current as in Dream River. I've got another issue with the fish population fluctuating in that river which I'll fix before I upload the build again and update the link on the downloads page.

Meanwhile, fly fishing is coming along. The casting is getting pretty good, the line is drifting as it should, and fish are catchable. I've got some more work to do on the line physics yet, and some posing for fighting a fish on the fly rod. Drifting a river in a boat is going to be fun, and from shore it's helpful now to be able to walk while casting, even while fighting a fish. So far I've just modeled one fly, a royal coachman dry. Just a start... I'll keep at it...

Will the new casting and line physics work for the normal lure fishing?

The physics for the fly casting are separate, but you'll be able to use any lightweight lure or bait with the fly rod. That should be a fun way to flick a small jig to crappies or a nightcrawler in a stream.

Oh that's a shame.
Will we be able to walk and wade on all the maps when normal lure fishing?

Currently the wading is only available on the stream and the river. I plan to allow wading in future lakes, and I could probably enable it in the existing ones if people really want that. The only reason I didn't do that up to this point is that the earlier lakes were are designed to be viewed from the water, and things could look strange if you got close to the edge of the world by walking. The new creek has a second low-detail landscape surrounding the main one to keep you from seeing the edge of the world, but the older lakes don't have that.

If you want to try wading a lake you could enable wading in Deer Lake and Mountain lake by just adding this line to the pjh_deer_lake.lak and pjh_mountain_lake.lak files:

shore_fishing_allowed=yes

I haven't tried it myself, but that ought to make those wadable.
